Hi

I’m with O2, for over 6 months and its great 10mb to 12mb. We are very happy with the speed and their service. You need to do your homework.
I was in the same predicament as most mobile broadband users re finding a suitable mobile broadband provider in my area.I spoke to all of the operators (mobile broadband) and I reviewed their coverage maps. They all indicated that they had coverage in the surrounding area. That’s where it ends. Until you try each of them you won’t know for sure which will suffice for your particularly requirements, and that can turn out to be quite expensive.
Before you decide on an operator, you should really know which mobile providers are operating at your house/office and their associated signal strengths. Signal strengths differ a lot at each corner of your house depending on the signal source. The operator’s returns policy for hardware is very strict.
A few friends of mine and I recently purchased a device, which allowed us to view the providers in my area and their signal strengths 3G & 4G. We were very surprised with the results, and in the end we made the correct decision in signing a contract with a provider which provided the best service in my area. One of my friends found good signal at the bottom of his garden and we ended up plugging his dongle into a 3G wireless router in his garden shed and connecting the shed to his bedroom via Cat5 and the rest is history!

Let us know if you think I can help with our gadget, we could carry out a survey for you. I know how frustrating it can be in choosing a provider.

Regards

I agree with the well put responses posted previously- stay away from O2- despite their very helpful customer care staff the company policy itself seems to be based on fleecing their users!

I’m on student broadband at the moment, which should be costing me a tenner a month. I went away for two weeks before the Christmas so for two weeks of the month I didn’t use it at all. I downloaded a couple of series and found out today that they charge extortionate amounts when you go over your alocated usage (which I have by about 10 gigs) if they charge at a rate of 1.6 euro per MB then I’m pretty much screwed. As a student (who they know well is highly likely to go over this limit) I cannot afford this so I am going to completely ignore the bill when it comes in and change to another provider.

Talk about shooting themselves in the foot in the long run…they do not seem like a very ethical company in this regard. I would not advise them to anyone.

The Internet provider from hell !!! I am unfortunately with o2, tried 3 and some of the other muppets all the same .Speed turned out so so at the start then a few months back but then downhill very fast. I have been out of work for a while now and trying to get work. Was supposed to have a conference call earlier with a guy in the States who is in the middle of the mountains in a place thats more rural than anywhere in Ireland and yet he still gets a “FULL BROADBAND ” connection.
Calling what isn’t even dial up of 10 years ago broadband is a complete joke and completly false but hey, thats Ireland again for you…they know they can get away with it.
Incidentally the same guy over there explained thats why all the big companies come here , because they can get away with anything they like . Most of the big ones who we can’t name here have or are under investigations by various different federal authorities…ah but we’ll take them ….jobs right !!! Gombeens again.
Envy the younger guys who can just emigrate, not that simple when you have commitments .
have to also laugh when our politicans and I mean all of them say Ireland can be a centre of excellence for this and that etc …….. it’s a centre for pulling strokes thats it!!!
Technolgy hub my backside.
02 ARE JUST A JOKE ……. Unless you are one of the lucky ones that can get UPC cable or line of sight broadband like me you are stuck. Again no line of sight no broadband.

O2 broadband is great for those of us who are old enough to feel nostalgic for the days of dial-up internet. Remember waiting several minutes for that jpeg of your favourite “actress” to load? O2 have faithfully recreated the experience.

Tired of youtube videos streaming instantly? With O2 broadband, you have time to go make a cup of tea while it loads. Hell, you can make a 4-course meal and enjoy a few games of chess while it loads.

Do note that their €19.99 monthly charge is merely a suggestion. My first bill was €380, so keep an eye on your download limit! I recommend avoiding sites with pictures or videos on them. And turn off those megabyte devouring antivirus updates!

Their customer service is excellent if you suffer from abnormally low blood pressure and want it raised.

Experiencing a broadband problem and want to contact them? Simply call them from your O2 mobile phone, right? NO you idiot! You will be put through to mobile phone customer care, with no broadband option. What you have to do is call them from your mobile dongle. Shout into it or something.

All in all, a service I would highly recommend to my ex.

Whatever you do – stay away from 02! I have been using 02 for my broadband for a few years now. I do not feel like a valued customer, quite the opposite. I have made many complaints about how poor the quality of service in my area is. Their customer service told me that the best thing I could do, was to get as many people as I could who live in my area, who use 02 broadband, to complain about their service. Then maybe there might be a chance that they will considering fixing the situation. In the meantime, they are quite happy to charge me for a service that half works. 02 only care about their corporate customers, every one else is just a nuisance as far as their concerned. Whatever you do, I urge you to go with one of their competitors!

Absolutely terrible service. I use the prepay 02 Hotshot and it’s a constant source of annoyance. The 02 network is prone on failing, and the reception in an area such as Dublin is disgraceful for such a busy city. 02 should be ashamed.

I signed up for O2 hotshot in july. It worked for one week and completely stopped. Rang the hotline at least 4 times and on average was treated dismissively. They told me that technicians could not get to my area to fix my problem. Yet other neighbours have had no problems. I waited two months patiently and even visited the nearest store who told me to deal with customer service. Finally, after 3 months they rang me to tell me they could not fix the problem and they would cancel my account. Customer service is appalling. Their lying deceitful salesmanship has no boundaries!!!!!!

I use the prepay USB modem and the service can at best be described as just so so. Where I live , I have got download speeds ranging from a max of about 1.6 Mbps to a low of around 0.25 Mbps , depending on the time of day. Uploads are just as variable and ping is rarely below 80. I would not commit myself to a contract even though prepay is poor value. 20 euro gets you a miserly 5 gb for 30 days. However, I will say that the service has never stopped completely, so it is always possible to do some online activity.

Do NOT go near o2, they are extortionists and have a complete disregard for customer service. I have had significant issues with them. They are untrustworthy. I signed a 9.99 a month contract, and they upped my price plan without informing me. I have lost all trust in this company. Plus, the service is awful, living in Dublin city centre and I’d get better download speed if I was using dial-up. Bottom line – AVOID AVOID AVOID.

Awful company – O2 will not protect you or your privacy. They are involved in an nasty extortion scheme where they give your IP details to companies who will then accuse you of downloading illegal films and music. AVOID!

Been with 3 – avoid like the plague. No eircom broadband available, digiweb – I heeded the warnings! By putting the O2 Hotshot in the attic I can receive a 3G signal most of the time – but then I have to get that downstairs and the ‘wireless’ signal is just not strong enough to receive the signal downstairs – and it is less than 5m. However, a SOLUTION, which may help others, especially as it allows you to put the modem higher which can often produce a better signal – I have connected a trail of motorised USB leads – these can ne connected together – up to 3x5m leads plus a standard USB lead at the end if you wish. Using this system, yes, I have in effect a wired system, but at least I can use it! It is the best broadband I have ever had using it like this – not that this says too much mind you, as prior to this I would make a drink between pages downloading!

So, for anyone struggling with speed from the Hotshot, try the lead system and see if it helps – it has lowered my blood pressure and made internet use a pleasure. Do note – when I take my laptop to better area or use a hotel’s system for instance I realise how slow my O2 really is – but for ‘rural Ireland’ – well, at least I can access the Internet without having a coronary through stress!!!

O2 staff have been very helpful and sorted out a patch of slow speed and kept me informed during it – it was sorted out in about 10days – well done O2!

I have fixed line broadband with O2 for the past year and the speed has deteriorated badly in the past month or so. I’ve talked to three different support technicians in the past week to try and get it sorted. So far, I’ve been given three different excuses and three identical brush-offs. Bottom line is, as far as they’re concerned the speed I’m getting is “acceptable” so there’s no problem and nothing to be done. They crawled all over me to get the business but now couldn’t be bothered to sort out the problems.

Well, luckily enough my contract period is finished so I’m finished with them.

I am surprised after reading the reviews here. I live in kent and the service here is good most of the times. Recently there was a network issue but the Indian lad was frank enough to admit that and whats more, he also waived off my bill. I spoke with a manager and trust me he was rude and din`t allow me to speak, so felt my voice was not heard. I feel the agent level staff is much better and know what they are doing or talking about.

o2 Mobile solutions while providing a decent rural experience and speed, are absolute bandits like many others with their over the limit charges. 1.6C per mb over is terrible, 15 years ago that may have been except able but with HD the defacto / default standard for playback on many devices, data must be chomped up.

Note – exceeding you, for example 12-15mb allowance by 1/10th in a month can cost you nearly twice the price you’d normally pay for the service, it’s extortionate and totally unjustifiable – it’s a pure money grabbing catch, there is no way they can warrant a charge like that for using such a small amount over – do the people setting the prices even know what a unit of bandwidth is? or was it an arbitory cap “sure charge them 2c a MB – doesn’t sound much, they won’t ming, whats that? One extra cute cat photo for 2c – bargain surely” – disgusting.

I use O2 for the last 2 years. It was a bit slow but was allright. But recently something just changed. The speeds just skyrocketing now. I got speeds like an old adsl phone line what is really good for a mobile broadband. Usually get 500kB/s and over, today even reach 750! wow.
But there is allways some problems. 15GB data limit, very easy to reach. I paid a few extremly high bills. Downloaded the myO2 app for my phone to check my remaining units. I had 2 GB allowance left so i downloaded some stuff. It cost me 60 euros because the counter is not up to date it’s show me 2 day old information.

Anyway I like the O2 but needs more data allowance. At least 50GB/ month or at least addons for extra data allowance

I am using O2 broadband via the O2 hotshot in north west Cork. Usually the speed is rather good (21 mbps, I believe) when the router is in 3G mode, however it often slips back to 2G when there is low network traffic and it can be a pain to get back to 3G. Lately I’ve noticed that around 1 or 2 am it will lose internet connection completely and will not reconnect for up to 6 hours. The price of €20 per is rather affordable for a 15gb data allowance. However this limit can be easily exceeded with the result of paying a ridiculous fee for the extra data (set at aprox. €0.02 per megabyte). Twice we have gone over that limit and both times we were required to pay over €100 without any warning that we were approaching the data limit or how much we may have to pay for usage if we exceed it. With all these factors, and the very limited choice of ISPs in Ireland, O2 is a reasonable provider. However, compared to the broadband services available in the UK, the prices we have to pay here for the quality of service is utterly ridiculous. Simply browsing the Virgin Media website will tell you this. Overall I would approach this with caution if you’re not careful you could end up paying a rather hefty sum if you don’t

I provide IT services to SMEs. I have just completed an evaluation of mobile broadband for a client in the Dublin 15 area with three different mobile broadband providers – 3, O2, and Vodafone.
The 3 network was tested first, see the ’3′ section for my summary of this offering.
The O2 network was tested using a Huawei E173 modem.
No difficulties were encountered in configuring the local network or in connection to the O2 network. Download speeds were estimated to be in the region of about 6Mb/s – twice that achieved by the 3 device.
The evaluation period was 1 month.
No problems were encountered during that time.
The client, and their staff, were very happy with the performance and reliability of the O2 network.
O2 are, without doubt, the best of the three mobile broadband providers tested for this location (Dublin 17).

My rating are explained as follows
I gave O2 4 stars for Performance because, compared to others, it consistently achieved speeds more than adequate for the client, 3 stars – the middle rating – for Customer Service because O2 customer support was not used and it would not be appropriate to either reward or punish O2 because of this, 5 stars for Reliability as no problems were encountered with the O2 service, 4 stars for Value for Money as – although we overpay for practically everything in this country – at least it worked, and 4 stars for the Overall Rating.

This is only a summary of my experiences. Others might well find their experience differs.

I am unfortunate enough to have moved to the Northwest, specifically around the south Sligo area. I checked the reception on my phone before accepting the residence. Seeing full bar reception I thought: ‘great this is for me’. It turned out that full reception was for 2g only (edge network). There is a huge ‘black hole’ of 3g reception in the Sligo area) The only 3g reception in the region is 15 miles away, and provided by 3, not O2.

Edge reception would at least be usable if it wasn’t provided by O2. The speed has never gone above 160kbps, which is around 18-20 kbs download, but stays at 60-70kbps for the vast majority of the time. This is even worse than diallup because the ping is so slow on mobile braodband, and the O2 servers are ultra slow to respond when clicking a link. If I click a link I can sometimes wait up to 2 or 3 minutes before there is any activity incoming. As you can imagine, closing the application and redialling up to 10 times to view a simple website is not what can be described as ‘reasonable service provision’.

They also seem to continuously update/maintain/clean out the servers, which leaves gaps of up to a day in service sometimes. I have contacted O2 several times when the service went altogether, unsurprisingly to no avail, being fobbed off with the usual ‘Edge network is not intended for internet use’ lies.

The only reason I have not cancelled the contract is that there are no other providers, and Eircom is just too expensive for me at the moment. I must also mention the e20 clandestine fee they place on your first bill. This was not in any way mentioned in the contract or on the phone when I signed up.

There is an O2 mast within 1km of where I live, but O2 obviously don’t feel it necessary to install the software/hardware on it for 3g.

O2 is absolutely abysmal in my opinion, even when I use my laptop in 3g areas and I couldn’t strongly enough advise people to seek another way of going online. I think the moral of the story here is move to another more decent country where things are done in a competent fashion if you want anything at all relating to public or corporate services.

Review by Frank O'Shea, December 29, 2011

In limerick city centre the speed from O2 is not bad. However, these past four days there has been no signal whatsoever. No one at O2 that I have spoken to has any clue at all nor can any one at O2 tell any customer just what is happening.
Currently they’re doing the ‘give ‘em the runaround’ routine.
I’ve tried them all; three being the worst in the country, but this past year O2 have been good enough.
Now I’m just wondering if the company is maybe going busy or something!

I am using O2 in East Co. Limerick with a dongle.
The speed is really bad and it is almost unusable, most of the time.
I googled O2 just now and see that a lot of people are having broadband speed issues. I don’t know why i am paying for this.It is giving me upload and download speeds of 490 kbs right now which is usable.

Can anyone recommend a better isp for a mobile users for east co Limerick and also for athlone?

thanks
Anna

A really poor quality ISP. Inconsistent speed, one day i could be downlading at 8mbps, the next it could be 1. constantly updating updating router firmware, which can cause total a total lack of Internet for anything upto a week. I personally would not recomend O2!!!!!
