Airwire

Airwire was set up to provide broadband to areas in the west of Ireland where nothing else was available. “We had been providing ourselves with broadband as there was no other option and saw the need among friends and neighbours – especially those who wanted to work from home or operate a business in rural Ireland. What started out as a fairly small provider in the Kinvara region covers now most of Co. Galway, the north of Co. Clare, the south of Co. Mayo and parts of Co. Roscommon.”

Eircom dialup is a lot better. They aren’t a proper company, but fly-by-night operators. They seem to spend more on their fancy vans than on customer equipment. #

I have tried to cancel the service, but I can’t until the equipment is removed … at my expense. I shall refuse to pay for their joke of a service and keep the equipment.

Anyone in the same situation: don’t be bullied by Pedersen or Maddison. They can’t do anything against you, they are not a tax paying company, their contracts are against the law and will not stand in court.

Today I cancelled my bill to Airwire after bullying from them. I had to go to Gort to the cyber cafe to write emails. I now have a 3G modem for my laptop. Cheaper and much faster than Airwire.

good connection

Review by John Burke, December 14, 2011

Terrible service, if it even qualifies for that. I dared trying to get help from Customer Service, but was abused and shouted at over the phone by the owner (?) Martin. He then called to my office and continued to abuse me. he seemed medicated or drugged. I’m considering to report them to Comreg. After some reading, and searching for information about them it seems that they have no license to operate and do not file returns to CRO or pay taxes. As I tried to use the connection for my office and business I wonder if i can actually claim expenditure against my tax bill for the Airwire bill, seeing that they are operating illegally. Their VAT number seems to be made up.

I subscribed to this service for 6 months as it was the only thing I could actually get out in the sticks. For the first couple of weeks the service wasnt very good but a couple of calls to customer service sorted that out. I found the guys in customer service to be very helpful and they always called back when they said they would.

I found that they charge a lot for a pretty slow 2mb connection. The connection was pretty reliable but seemed to reset itself every evening giving about 10 mins of downtime. The download speed acheived was about 200-250kb/s. It was grand for downloading torrents but very poor for streaming any media. I couldnt really stream 4OD and most of the time the connection struggled to stream youtube content at 360p. I didnt really try gaming on the connection so I cant really comment how well it works, although I was getting a ping of about 80-100ms.

I wouldnt choose this service again unless I absolutely had to, but if I did have to I wouldnt be horrified. They could really sweeten the deal by dropping the price by about €10.

I had never had anything to do with such a hopeless service before. For a year and a half the internet connection was notoriusly unavailable ( if one wanted to sum the break-down time up it would certainly total more than three months of no serive at all), I had spent over E 100 for all the phone calls to raport the break- downs. This provider does not have a toll free customer service. They would take the information about the problem, promiss to call back and yet noone had ever called me back! Both, the customer service supervisor, Denise and the owner of this firm, Martin are arrogant and, simply put, rude. I am extremely happy I no longer am their client.

My experiences are the opposite of Tammy’s: rarely any downtime, everything works: from FTP,SSH, VPN, VOIP and Torrents to running your own web server, no port blocking, no cap, high upload speed. Maybe I have good LOS or less nodes are used to relay the signal but i have low pings and am very happy.
I never needed customer service so far (1 year in).

The only 2 minor points I like to make are speed (2Mbs) and price. It would be nice to see the price come down a bit and speeds to go up but that is probably unlikely considering the technology used.
