AVOID!!! AVOID!!! AVOID!!! Indian Call Centres of the worst kind. If you finally manage to understand what they are saying, you’ll realise they don’t have the faintest clue. It takes 3-4 calls before you get through to a “manager”, who is slightly more intelligible and is allowed to “think outside the script”. DON’T EVER allow them to use the remote assistance function, as it will totally sc** up your PC as well as allowing them to read your emails.
10 GB allowance just evaporates into the ether, even when there’s no internet connecting programmes open (I use ShaPlus Broadband Meter). If you’re thinking of P 2 P just forget it between 7am and 12am, as you won’t be getting more than 60kbs and with the allowance vanishing mysteriously just surfing normally, you can’t afford it anyway.

These guys are so Bad, We had them in our appartment and it used to cause arguments because myself and my flat-mate thought that the other was doing excessive downloading which was causing them to trottle us. when my flatmate moved out I realised that they were just crap. I got on to customer service who had previously told us that we were being trottled for excessive use. This time they said that they are not able to provide 24Mb bb in my area. That would have been nice to know a few months earlier. were now downgraded to a 3Mb bb package which has never broken 2Mb and instead of it being trottled to 80’s dial up speed It just stops working. This basically means you can forget about anything bar loading long pages of text, videos. games, downloads. forget it with these.

I will give them this. when you ring them they pick up. you will just end up wishing that they didn’t. rang them today to complain and was told that it was my wireless router. I told them that i had a direct connection. they said that it would still most likely be the router. I told them I was connected directly to there non wireless router. they said that they could then see an issue on the line and that they would rectify the filter. I gave it two hours and rang back I spoke to someone else and was told that the last call I made had been recorded as there being a error on my side and nothing to do with filtering as I had been told. I’m not sure what that says for them but I will be checking if UPC has fiber down near me and getting rid of this shower asap.

Signed up to 24MB, only chance of ever seeing over 10 MB is 5 in the morning on a BanK Holiday Monday. Connection times out at least twice a day needing the router to be restarted, my brother has the same issue one mile down to the road. The unlimited package is only unlimited to 60GB a month as far as I can see from the cap limits they’ve imposed on be in line with their ‘fair usage’ policy. Will be movin to Magnet or Smart once contract up. Don’t think the fact that vodafone have taken them over will do anything to keep the price down or improve on technical/customer service

Been with them for 2 years now. They had to give me 4 months free net just to keep me. My contracy runs out soon, I won’t be staying.

At one point I was without the internet for a whole month. I phoned every single day only be fobbed off to a call centre in a foreign country where they asked me to repeat the same steps 500 times. Eventualy I got through to somebody who was doing their job properly, and he fixed the problem with 2 days.

Dreadful.

Awful. Have the 1mb connection and only get a couple of hours with 1mb speed then in the evening the connection goes and to get the connection back i have to make a phone call. Once it is back the speed is only around 0.3mb. Called them out several times and they didnt manage to fix anything. Switching to Chorus broadband 10mb tomorrow so hopefully all will be good

I’m on the BT 3mb BB and total talk phone service. I’ve nothing good to say about their BB, it varies wildly in speed from day to day, to impreove the speed u need to reboot the router – not acceptable. I get the impression they care even less than Eircom about their customers (they now seem to have thrown in the towel and outsourced their BB to Vodafone – like that’ll make a difference).

I’m going to go with UPC 10 MB BB with lower contention ratio for cheaper.

Great if you want to use the Internet off peak. Useless if you need to use it between 18:30 – 23:00. I’m guessing its from all everyone logging on after work to download or play games. I get speeds of up to 5Mbps on a 8Mb connection. As a gamer myself, i cant play 5-6 days of the week due to horrible latency at this time. I’m a Warcraft addict and may have to stop playing, which is unacceptable :P

Was looking forward to the upgrade firstly to 8mb and then to 24mb. Checked the download speed recently when I was supposed to be on 24mb and realised that I was only getting approx 4mb. When I contacted BT they confirmed the download speed and said that although the Dublin 15 exchange was upgraded that the line from the exchange to my house is not capable of carrying any more than 3mb. I live in an estate that is approx 10 years old and I’m still getting flyers in the door advertising 24mb. Has anyone else had this problem?

In addition to this, sometimes when I’m working from home and using the internet connection continuously it logs me out ever 20 minutes which is very annoying when I’m working.

Have had issues in the past regarding availability aswell.

Initially I tried to set-up with UTV, but the issues in trying to get things set-up caused me to cancel that to go with BT. The set-up was straight-forward, and performance has been pretty good. Latency is sometimes higher than I’d like, but the 3MB line is fine for my warcraft addiction.

Customer support have always been friendly and helpful. Had to call them a few times, and so far not been disappointed. Very few serious outages over the past 3 years.

Recently switched to BT from Smart as i’ve moved house and Smart are unfortunately not available there. While not as good as Smart, BT are a close second. Went for 7.6 Mb and speed test result between 5.5 Mb to 6 Mb….not bad considering i’m using it in the early evenings.

Their customer service is great, very helpful getting the line set up & offered great advice as dealing with Eircom was as difficult as usual.

Ok, I live in Kilkenny…supposedly less than 2km from “the exchange”. I have signed up to the 24Mb package and achieve a download speed of approximately half that. When I complained that this was misleadingly low the tech and service guys and girls at BT tried to blame factors within my home on the loss of speed. The router is plugged into the socket at the front door and although this might not be the most up to date socket in the country the staff in BT don’t give a stuff with regard to getting someone out from Eircom to check it. They offer as fast a connection as anyone for the same money and they know it. Don’t get me wrong 12Mb is great compared what we are all used to in this country but I just wish BT were honest and market it as up to 12Mb instead of saying its something its not (for the vast majority of its customers). I would love to hear from other users in Kilkenny as to what speeds they getting on this 24 Mb package.

I am with BT about 3 Years now and never had a problem, I can get 6mg on my line but this is bit stream as they have not upgraded the exchange in Clontarf yet, look forward to this though as i would like to experience 24mg when watching live football streaming, my speed never drops below 4.5 mg even at busy periods,my bills are reasonable and they even gave me a call to see if i was happy with the service, something NTL never ever dsid for me, I will be staying loyal to BT but wish they would upgrade Clontarf exchange so we can finally get the full benefit of Broadband in Ireland. I’m jealous of any of you that can already avail of this.

I moved to BT from Eircom and find the service excellent, the BB speeds I am getting are great. I signed up for the 24Mb package and generally I am getting speeds of up to 12Mb. As far as i could find there were no other providers providing high speeds for such a low price. I have been with BT now for 3 years and I have never had an issue.

I’ve had some reliability issues with my BT service but in both cases it was Eircom’s fault. Other than that they deliver exactly what they say.

I used BT’s 3Mbps DSL package for a year or so while I worked from home as a telecommuter, from my home in a residential area in Dublin’s northside.

Technically, it was pretty crappy. Instead of 3Mbps, I found I was only getting 987Kbps, less than a third of what I was being billed for. At times it dropped to 600Kbps. There was also occasional packet loss rates of 5%-20%. (I never established why this was, although I was able to ascertain that it wasn’t a problem in my own wiring.)

In addition, as Eoin noted above, they have a bug in their billing system which they work around by requiring that each customer’s connection be disconnected and reconnected on a daily basis. Every time this happens, your IP address changes, resulting in all established connections breaking. For some kind of hypothetical non-techie consumer using broadband to read their Hotmail, this might be fine, but for a telecommuter, it was extremely frustrating and disruptive.

Having said all that, I haven’t personally found an ISP in Ireland with levels of service much better than this, anyway. :( But at least you should save your money and not go for 3MBps service, when you’re not going to be getting more than a third of that…

Luke warm offering in my experience – not awful, not great. Speeds tend to get savaged every now and then. Supposed to be on one of those 2Mb lines that was upgraded to 3Mb in June but I’m still waiting. If anything my speeds have gone down. I made a couple of complaints about the speed problems and they were dequeued from the fault system without resolution – once I got no response at all and the second time, seemingly a voicemail to me was enough to clear the ticket. Was with them when I moved house a few years back too and it took 4 months to move my number and broadband to another house on the same exchange and where the phone number originated from in the first place and which was broadband ready too. I have found customer service to be appalling in terms of waiting time and even trying to get something done when you get through – the infamous “somebody will call you back” routine. The service works stably, as in I don’t ever seem to drop a connection. However, speed does fluctuate, free upgrades off the back of LLU are slow to come around and customer service is best left alone. Technical problems are probably as much the fault of the national network owner as they are BT though, in fairness to them.

Only just changed to BT from Eircom and upgraded from 1M to 24M in the process for what I hope is a cheaper service(no bills yet). Can’t fault the performance or service in the first 3 weeks. Normally have at least 10M download. Haven’t used customer service but they were helpful when the modem never arrived(not their fault) and they did connect me ahead of schedule which was a surprise.

I have a 3Mb line – can’t get 8Mb and this is the first I’ve heard of this 24mb package.

When the performance is good it’s good, but sometimes it slows down to a crawl, like 56K modem speeds. Usually late evening hours, from 8 or 9pm on until after midnight. Disconnecting & reconnecting makes no difference. So maybe the lines are over contended and there are loads of gamers coming online or something. If so they are having a sh*t time of it as well & probably getting blown up every second

I’m lucky enough to be on a LLU exchange. My 3 Mbps package was upgraded to 8 Mbps in June, then 24 Mbps in August 2008 at no extra cost. Performance and reliability I can’t fault on my personal experience. Consistently high speeds, even at the usual peak times.

I’ve given customer service a 3-star rating as I guess that’s neutral. I can’t really comment on it as I’ve never had to make use of it.

Grand performance does what it said on the tin. We are on the phibsboro exchange. Not great value, it was cheap enough when we signed up but then the price jumped after 6 months. They don’t have 6Mb or 24 Mb in all areas, we can only get 3Mb. They disconnect you once a day which is a problem if you are trying to run an always-on server or need a fixed IP.
